Information on the hands-on POCUS lab:

The POCUS course will consist of multiple point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skills taught by a well-known CRNA owned business, Maverick. The skills would be cardiac, gastric, and pulmonary POCUS assessments.  After completing the course requirements, the CRNA would be able to make faster and more accurate diagnoses, improve outcomes, and improve the overall level of anesthetic care provided by the CRNA. Each CRNA who completes the course would earn a Certificate of Completion and earn Class A CEUs.

The course would consist of two parts: 1) online modules to be completed prior to the lab; and 2) the hands-on lab itself held at the KANA Fall Meeting on October 25th in Overland Park.

Online Didactic Modules: 4-8 hours completed prior to lab

This course is not a typical “death-by-PowerPoint” lecture. The modules are filled with interactive presentations, ultrasound videos, pre & post-tests, knowledge checks, and landmark target practice activities. These modules will be asynchronous allowing participants to take the course at their own pace and at their own location. The modules were developed by experienced and currently practicing CRNAs, education experts in pedagogy from Texas A&M University, and instructional designers.

Hands-on Lab: 3 hours during the KANA Fall Meeting on October 25th in Overland Park

In this half-day lab, CRNAs apply lessons from the online didactic modules to experiential training exercises in a clinical environment, developing confidence in using the latest ultrasound equipment on live models to perform point-of-care diagnoses. The flipped classroom model ensures the participants to get the repetitions they need to attain the POCUS skills.
